saltpeppe by bartolomeus saltpeppe by bartolomeus
This satisfies me in my search for realism with HDRI images. Real simple scene with no lights, panels etc, Just glow dome and model

Daily Deviation

Given 2004-07-06
A scene of salt and pepper may not be everyones ideal image, but when you look at saltpeppe by ~bartolomeus you have to think again. The use of HDRI images to create the lighting is well done and just adds that extra touch to the final image. ( Featured by randomcasualty )

wow, great use of HDR! what renderer did you use? the reflections are perfect; not too blown out. the chrome came out just right. my only thing is perhaps the oil could use more surface tension to give it a litttle more weight. but great job. looks really good.

Thanks. I know about the oil but don't have much time to re-model. I use only Strata to do this kind of images.

Pretty nice... the HDRI makes the piece though really, as the scene itself is very simple.

Works well.

Impressive gallery you have. Do you make also tuned cars. I sometimes need a designer who can tune cars in 3D for concepts of Sony Music.

I think that this piece has brought out the true realism which we can create throughout a 3d program. And here you have proved, that realism is not a deed, but a part of our life which we use to give the illusion to others that something that looks real, may not be as real as we think it could be.

Not only has the texturing got the perfection, but the modelling, materials and lighting are stunning as well. I love how you have added the depth of field effect to this creating that true realistic photograph experience into it as iff a proffessional had taken the photo on that angle on purpose.

Even though outside the render it doesnt look too realistic, but being soo plain and showing part of the HDRi it extends its realism and effects of which a photographa would have done. Congratulations on such a wonderful piece, and it truely does deserve the Daily Deviation within this category.

hmmm... nice. really nice. realism fascinates me too :D

just a couple of things: the 'pepper' texture is a little low-res... why not just use a simple procedural noise texture? also, the sky-dome doesn't seem to be mapped properly, there's black areas... and lastly, it looks like you've applied a 'sharpen' filter in Photoshop... this really brings out the aliasing on the edges.

anyway, congrats on getting the DTF. what program do you use, btw?

Very nice render and lighting! Excellent use of HDRI ;)
The only "unrealistic" flaw I could see, is that there is some graininess in the reflections (you could render with more samples) and the pepper inside the glass looks like a mapped cylinder (which it is, I suppose), and you probably wouldn't want that. You could try a more detailed map or maybe particles.
That's all, I hope I was useful a little!

looks just like a photograph, but it's missing a few things and I would take out others.

It's too bright on the tops, looks like a long exposure hand-held that came out too blurry due to too much light. Dampen the light or diffuse it a little.

Add some fingerprints to that chrome! Really could use something.

Salt and pepper...I want to see grams of salt/pepper on the table.

Maybe even add a little wash rag to the table with water leaking out of it onto the table.

Just all around make it more beliveable. It's a fantastic image and model...go with it.

I agree with the others about the pepper texture being too low res. Try to also fix the distortion of the pepper texture around the side to make it look more like the top of the pepper. The reflections on the silver give away that this is a render, it seems like from the suggestions a higher res version scaled down will fix that. Also, I don't know if it's just the render, but the top of the container to the right of the pepper looks way too blurred.

I can see you took a lot of time to make something that looks great, but just a few tweaks will make it so realistic, you'll be hard pressed to tell it from a photo.

niiice! I think the only ways you can tell its an HDRI and not a photo is possibly the slightly pixelated parts, and the pepper, which looks like a goit to render, anyway.
And congrats on the DD!
